What is Temp Work?

What is Temp work?  Temp work is simply temporary work. Temp work agencies supply workers to Companies for either replacement of absent regular workers or for special jobs.

There are two basic situations that might occur in a company that creates a need for temporary employees. The first is the absence of regular workers. The regular worker may be on vacation or may be injured, it does not really matter. The Company needs a worker to take their place during their absence. The second situation is a special need that requires additional workers for a fixed period of time. This might entail a special project such as an inventory or major sales event. What is temp work? It is supplying those two needs.

Each job is basically different when it comes to availability. Some positions can be unmanned for a period of time without harm to the organization. A person might take their vacation, shut down their office, and catch up when they return. Another employee might be out with the flu for a week and the other employees can pick up the slack. In other cases, this is not possible. Some positions are critical and if someone is absent, another person must be found to fill the hole until the employee returns.

In some cases, an organization might take on a special project that requires additional employees for a set period of time. The cost of hiring these employees, if the time frame is temporary, is very prohibitive. The better solution is to bring in temporary employees for the duration of the project.

It is the Temp Agency that makes temp work possible and valuable to an organization. The Temp Agency does the hiring and bookkeeping work involved as well as the screening and qualifying of the temporary employees. The client organization can fill their temporary needs immediately with a prescreened employee with reasonable expectations of success. Time is the key issue here. A new employee will need several weeks of preparation before they can be of use to an organization, but the temp employee can be put to work, usually with minimal training.

Even jobs that require more technical skills can be filled by temp employees. In many cases, the temp employee can take the place of a regular employee in a less skilled position allowing that person to step up to the vacant job. Temp work does much to eliminate loss time and allow special projects to be undertaken. It also serves as an excellent way for employees entering the job market to explore various opportunities or work part time on limited schedules.
